Chapter 5 – Main Characteristics of Relevance for the Assessment of Complex Inorganic Materials

ABSTRACT
The proper understanding of the key characteristics of complex inorganic materials such as their composition (typical concentrations and concentration range) and speciation of their constituents/ingredients, or their physical form is key to complete a robust and realistic risk assessment. In addition, metal specificities such as natural occurrence, essentiality, solubility, complexation, and bioavailability should be taken into account. The chapter explains some of the specific characteristics to be considered in the assessment, applying it to the a practical case: the environmental assessment of a copper concentrate.
