ABSTRACT

In Marlys Witte's world, "ignorance, failure and chaos reign supreme." As the self-proclaimed mother of the medical Ignorance Movement (the "Ignoramamama" as she likes to call herself), Witte has developed an internationally recognized Curriculum on Medical (and Other) Ignorance, targeting medical, graduate, undergraduate and K-12 students and teachers. The Ignorance Curriculum deals with unanswered/unasked questions and unquestioned answers — "all the things we know we don't know, don't know we don't know, and think we know but don't." In the virtual world, Witte and her colleagues have also created a Medical Ignorance Exploratorium and Virtual Clinical Research Center/Questionarium (VCRC/Q) grid. To further emphasize "ignoramics" (as the counterbalance to "informatics") and also take Failure and Chaos out of the closet, she is now designing The Ignorance University to rescue educational institutions from the Knowledge Factory business model they have become. Witte is Professor of Surgery and Director of Student Research Programs at the University of Arizona College of Medicine, President of the Ignorance Foundation (devoted to all we have left to learn and discover), and Secretary-General of the 45-nation International Society of Lymphology. She specializes in disorders of the lymphatic system (lymphatics, lymph nodes, lymph and lymphocytes) and body swelling and conducts research in basic and clinical lymphology.

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
