The pain occurs along with constipation or diarrhea. Other common symptoms are bloating, passing mucus in the stools, or a sense that the bowels have not been completely emptied. The exact cause of irritable bowel syndrome is not known. However, a number of clinical studies have suggested a link between childhood pain or abuse and adult irritable bowel syndrome. This hypothesis was tested in an animal model of neonatal colon pain or inflammation.
